"Attached you’ll also find a proposal to the study of the LS during the period December (first two weeks) to link the study to the COP 21 in Paris. The text attached explains briefly the meaning of COP 21, the UN Conference on Climate Change, and offers some petitions so that in Paris concrete commitments will be made by governments and all society regarding Climate Change.
Those who have already begun a program of study can insert the proposal into the program started.
Please spread as much as possible this message to promote the study of the Encyclical LS of Pope Francis as a concrete gesture of the Franciscan Family worldwide, in communion with the Inter-Franciscan delegation of 20 people who will be present in Paris attending the COP 21.
We also want to make pressure on governments for them to really take bold decisions, in every possible level, to help stop climate change, which is already affecting millions of people around the world, especially the poorest.

WHAT IS COP21?
The United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international environmental
agreement on climate change. They are holding their 21st annual Conference of
the Parties (COP) in Paris
COP BACKGROUND
The international political response
to climate change began at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, where a framework for
action was established (UNFCCC). The aim of the framework was to stabilize
greenhouse gases (GHGs) to avoid dangerous man-made interference with the
climate system.
The first COP took place in Berlin in 1995 in order to review the framework
implemented in Rio . Since then several key COP
meetings include:

COP3 where the Kyoto Protocol was adopted

COP11 where the Montreal Action Plan was
produced

COP15
in Copenhagen

COP17
in Durban
MAIN ISSUES
COP21 is aiming to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on
climate change, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C.
The stakes are high: the aim is to
reach, for the first time, a universal, legally binding agreement that will
enable us all to combat climate change effectively and boost the transition
towards resilient, low-carbon societies and economies. To achieve this, the
future agreement must focus equally on efforts to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions in order to limit global warming to below 2°C, as well as societies’
ability to adapt to existing climate changes. These efforts must take into
account the needs and capacities of each country. The agreement will enter into
force in 2020 and will need to be sustainable to enable long-term change.
The Franciscan involvement at COP 21
Romans VI, the inter-Franciscan JPIC
Commission, is promoting a Franciscan presence at COP 21. It includes Franciscans International, the
worldwide Franciscan family and the Franciscan Family of France as hosts. Plans are underway for a delegation of about
20 Franciscans from around the world, including those of France
PROPOSAL FOR THE FRANCISCAN FAMILY

Guide to help Franciscans around the world and other groups to reflect on
Laudato Si. The Study guide proposes 9 encounters and our suggestion is that
you organize the first encounter for this study in the week of the COP 21
Meeting (30th Nov – 12th Dec), in communion of prayer with
those of the Franciscan Family who will be participating at the summits at COP
21.

look seriously at the situation of those populations most effected by global
climate change especially the Small Island States, and consider the

the world but in the love and fulfillment we find in encountering the Triune
God; we pray to the Lord
